The Gathering: Chapter 2

“Everything happens for a reason,” the Priest said, continuing the sermon.

“Not everything,” Mary muttered under her breath.

She has been irked by that statement ever since her parents died.

Why is it only unfortunate events that are pre-ordained to serve a bigger purpose?

Her parents’ death only brought two things. Family betrayals born of greed and a short-lived childhood for her sister.

What bigger purpose did those serve?

She wondered what Jason’s death would bring.

So far, his family had been quiet. Not even offering input on the funeral arrangements.

Mary knew of Jason’s altercation with his family just after their wedding, two months before his demise.

Although he claimed it was because of his unwillingness to continue in the family business, she thought it was because of her and her mother-in-law’s mutual intolerance of each other.

But, neither Jason nor his family confirmed the actual reason.

Their silence, however, spoke volumes. Mary knew a storm was coming, and she was bracing for it.

The service ended with a recessional hymn.

By then, the majority of the gathering was fighting back their tears, and few were unsuccessful. By far the loudest lamenters were Mrs. Hampshire and her daughter, Jason’s sister, Akila.

Everyone expected Mary to be in tears, and they were disappointed not to hear the widow’s wail.

She had completed her stages of grief.

After all, it’d been eight weeks since Jason died and six weeks since investigators confirmed he was murdered.
