Album Review: Juice WRLD’s Legends Never Die

By Cynthia Akinrinmade

Juice WRLD’s first posthumous album, Legends Never Die, was released on Friday, 10th of July 2020. The album was released seven months following the rapper’s death at just 21 years old.
Juice WRLD, born Jarad Higgins, definitely redefined SoundCloud and emo rap within a short period of time. Following two albums- Goodbye&Good Riddance and Death Race For Love, a collaborative project with Future, WRLD On Drugs, and several hit singles, he went from a SoundCloud rapper to one of the biggest stars of this generation.

Legends Never Die is a 21-track project with features from The Kid Laroi, Polo G, Halsey and more. His estate tries to pay homage to the late rapper but honestly the project is packed; with a total of 23 producers and over 40 writers, the album which consists of 21 songs and spans 55 minutes seems overstuffed. There are also several fillers. It’s quite obvious that the creative mind behind the music is missing.

The album’s main themes revolve around anxiety, love and dependency on drugs. On “Conversations” and “Bad energy”, the rapper deals with his demons and addresses his drug use. With “Blood On My Jeans”, he talks about his deep love for his girlfriend and touches on weaponry.

Jarad is tributed by artists like Young Thug, Eminem, J Cole, G Herbo and more on “The man, the myth, the legend”. “Wishing well” features raw and honest lyrics like “let’s be for real/if it wasn’t for the pills/ I wouldn’t be here/ but if I keep taking these pills/I won’t be here. The honesty displayed here and on most of his projects is one of the reasons he has a loyal and dedicated fan base.

All in all, the album is beautiful and poetic and it’s definitely what his fans needed.
Stand out tracks:- Blood on my jeans, Come & go, Righteous and Life’s a mess
